Spp. Valeriana officinalis
Fam. Valerianaceae
Spicy, bitter and warm. Sedative, nervine, antispasmodic, carminative.
Valerian has a very particular taste. Traditionally, it has been used in sleep, insomnia, anxiety, nervousness, and depression blends because of its purported relaxing effects. It is said to also be useful in helping mitigate various pains, from muscle aches, menstrual cramps to rheumatism.
Note: about 5-10% of people experience the exact opposite effects, becoming more awake and alert instead of relaxed due to an inability to break down a certain compound in valerian.
