St. John's Wort Aerials
Spp. Hypericum perforatum
Fam. Guttiferae
Cool and bitter. Sedative, anti-inflammatory, astringent, antidepressant.
Today, St. John’s wort is probably most popularly known as an antidepressant herb. However, it is not thought to be a broad ranging antidepressant. It seems to be most helpful during the winter months, and for those whose depression affects the nervous system. It is traditionally used to treat nerve injuries and pains, including sciatica, neuralgia, and rheumatism.
Note: St. John’s should not be taken while on SSRIs.
