Slippery Elm Bark c/s
Spp. Ulmus rubra
Fam. Ulmaceae
Cooling as well as moistening with ingestion of water and drying without the ingestion of water. Mucilaginous demulcent, diuretic, anti-inflammatory.
Slippery Elm is thought to have much of the same properties as marshmallow root. It has been used to help with soothing the respiratory tract, the digestive tract, the urinary system and is used for a sore throat. Slippery elm is said to create a thicker gel-like consistency than marshmallow, and has been used as a mild laxative. It is purportedly good for wasting diseases when it is made into a gruel-like consistency, because it is thought to be nutritive, and is said to stay down if nothing else will.
Note: slippery elm at times can prevent full absorption of prescription medication because of its strong ability to coat the digestive tract.
