Long pepper has a taste that is reminiscent of schezwan peppercorns, in that it has a slight numbing effect on the mouth. It is this numbing quality that is said to make it useful for toothaches when applied directly on the tooth. It is also similar to common black peppercorns in that it has been used to help stimulate digestion, bring warmth to the body, increase blood circulation, and dry out mucus. Long pepper has also been used for pain relief for minor inflammatory pains, such as in arthritis and rhinitis.
