Sassafras was most likely the original flavoring for root beer. It is considered to have much of the same properties as sarsaparilla. In addition, it has been used for uplifting a person’s mood. Traditionally was used in balancing hormones, rheumatism and for psoriasis. The leaf is considered to be lighter in taste and effect than the root.
